Villa Bibbiani’s vineyard soil

Villa Bibbiani's vineyard soil

The soil where the vineyards of Villa Bibbiani grow fully represents the Montalbano area. Depending on the altitude of the zone, the soil’s composition changes significantly: at the higher altitudes sand and marl are the main components, while clay characterizes the lower ones. As you probably know, the soil affects the quality of the wine. The different characteristics of our vineyards’ soil composition confer elegance and typicality to Villa Bibbiani wines.

The soil components of Villa Bibbiani

  1.  “SCHELETRO” or ROCKY DEPOSITS. Soil rich in “scheletro” are composed of coarser particles of rocky deposits. This component is fundamental for the drainage and aeration of the soil, and it constitutes the base where the other components lay
  2. SANDSTONE. It a soil component which varies in size, and it is one of the main sedimentary rocks found in the area. It gives elegance and longevity to the wine. The soil characterized by sandstone is well drained and soft; therefore, the roots can find all the nutrients they need.
  3. MARLSTONE. A typical type of soil of the northern Apennines zone, in Tuscany. This soil component is characterized by rocks divided into small clods, typical of a clayey soil that easily splits into prism-shaped stones. Marlstone is a brittle stone that confers precious mineral elements to the soil which affect the vine grapes and give the wine great structure, depth and aromatic intensity.
